Belgian Beer tasting delight

Yesterday we were delighted to be introduced to a new range of Belgian beers at a small tasting arranged by Martin Tucker from Keg King SA at the V&A Waterfront’s Market on the Wharf.

The Belgian Trading Company (BTC) has imported a range of beers and will be distributing these into the South African market and I think many people will be delighted! To date we have had pretty much the same range of beers from Belgium, except of course if you are a regular to Den Anker, who have always had a wonderful range of their own imports.

Just peachy!

BTC is bringing in beers from 5 Belgian breweries; from Brewery Lindemans they have Lindemans Kriek (3.5%) and Lindemans Pecheresse (2.5%); from Huyghe Brewery the wonderful strong ale Delirum Tremens (8.5%) and the fruity Floris Framboise (3.6%); from the Van Steenberge Brewery we tasted a Gulden Draak (10.5%) and a Bornem Double (8.0%) Abbey beer; from Het Anker Brewery a strong ale aptly named Lucifer (8.0%) and the 2012 WBA World’s Best Dark Beer, Gouden Carolus Classic (8.5%); and finally a brew that made Lenny very happy was the Celis White, a witbier made by Celis Brewery who were the original Hoegaarden Wheat Beer brewers in Belgium.

So next time you feel like something classy and different, keep an eye out for some of the above brews. You will be very pleasantly surprised.

Just remember that these types of beers are not session beers. If you plan on watching the whole rugby game from start to finish, start with one or two of the brews with a lower alcohol percentage, because you certainly feel the kick of a 10.5% Gulden Draak.
